Lactose is found, naturally only in the milk of mammals and therefore in all dairy products. Lactose intolerance occurs for two reasons mainly: inability to digest lactose or a lactase deficit.

Therefore in GetQoralHealth and with publications in the magazine "Clinical Nutrition in Medicine" we present the main classifications of lactose intolerances.

1. Primary intolerances They can be of 3 types: congenital lactase deficiency, primary lactase deficiency or late onset.

2. Secondary intolerances . Within this type of intolerance two stand out: malabsorption of monosaccharides that produce prolonged and severe diarrhea. The second is the malabsorption of secondary lactase that damages the intestinal mucosa and brings as a consequence other diseases such as allergic enteropathies, immune type or parasitic, bacterial and viral infections.

Congenital lactase deficiency (or of birth) It is uncommon and some features are constant diarrhea at the beginning of feeding, although intestinal cells are normal; it is in the microvilli where lactase is completely lacking.

Treatment. It consists of the supply of lactose-free infant formulas.

Primary lactase deficiency. Some physiopathological condition that causes damage to the intestinal mucosa or generates the loss of lactate-containing epithelial cells is associated.

Treatment. Eliminate the cause that damages the intestinal mucosa.

According to National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Information Technologyto In Mexico, about half of the Mexican population has some degree of lactose intolerance. Nutrition specialists recommend choosing dairy products such as soy, almonds or canary seed.

The researchers indicate the most frequent intolerance is thelate-lactase primary lactase deficiency; They also explain that making a clinical diagnosis of lactose intolerance is complex.

However, the most frequent symptoms are diarrhea, abdominal distension, abdominal pain, flatulence, cramps, lethargy, dizziness and vomiting. Learn more about your health!
