They launch campaign to fight prostate cancer

The capital government, launched on May 30, 2011, the Campaign for Detection and Timely Attention of the Cancer of Prostate, with the purpose of making a call to the consciences of the men so that the necessary tests are realized that avoid this suffering.

The administration of Mexico City undertakes this action, said the Head of Government, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon , because prostate cancer is one of the main Causes of death among males . "The main function of government is to protect life, the first right we must protect is life; we are talking about the essential function of the government, "he said.

With the exception of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common disease among men. one of every 6 will be diagnosed With this condition, however, due to the scientific advances of the XXI Century, only one in 32 will die if it does not detect it in time and receives early attention.

Statistics place prostate cancer as the third leading cause of death in men. In 2010, the Health System of the capital reported 8,575 detections of this type of cancer; thousand 489 prostatic hyperplasia detections and 15,614 negative detections.

In the Federal District, the last two years this condition has increased in at least 30%. Hence, the importance of launching a campaign of this magnitude in the city, for which a video with the image of the Box World Champion will be promoted, Juan Manuel Márquez , with the purpose of sensitizing the male population about the importance of supervising the absence of symptoms and, where appropriate, the prostate antigen study.

50 thousand leaflets, 20 thousand posters, 10 thousand flyers will be distributed and a jingle from the musician and composer Chacho Gaytán will be broadcast on radio. All under the idea of "K.O. to Prostate cancer ”.

The goal, Marcelo Ebrard said, is to start today, a very intense campaign in the city with the male population to identify symptoms and if present, take a blood sample to determine the level of prostate antigen and whoever is at a high level, channel it to health centers for further analysis.

Accompanied by the Delegational Head in Coyoacán, Raúl Flores, the capital city leader stressed that this is an unprecedented action in the city, because there have been no large-scale campaigns to work on this issue. The goal is to achieve at least 400,000 prostate antigen tests, similar to the number of breast cancer exams performed on women in the city.

The City Government is very concerned, he said, because, first, it is not well evaluated, "we suppose it is greater than the reports we have today, but we know that it is a very serious problem."

In the presence of the boxer, Juan Manuel Márquez , Ebrard Casaubon explained that being the population at risk, men over 40, as the demographic pyramid changes, more men will have the possibility of developing prostate cancer.

For this reason, he spoke for the use of medical advances that make it possible to ensure that many men can be saved if it is detected in a timely manner, as opposed to when they identify themselves in an advanced stage in which "the man will have enormous suffering ”.

For his part, the Secretary of Health of the capital, Armando Ahued Ortega , exhorted the males who live in the city to join prevention actions, because diseases detected in time, can reverse the bodily and mental suffering of those who suffer them.

He called for a change in culture, because men need to take better care of their health, acquire healthy habits and prevent diseases such as prostate cancer. Therefore, he invited the men to examine if they present symptoms such as difficulty urinating or dribbling; frequent need to urinate, especially at night; pain or burning when urinating or ejaculating and / or bleeding, as well as incontinence, pain or tenderness in the bones, particularly in the back, hip or pelvis; Weight loss and exaggerated fatigue.

These symptoms are the ones that alert the abnormal growth of the prostate gland, to form a tumor that can invade other organs of the body, explained Ahued Ortega, noting that it is not "a matter of virility, but of courage".

Men at higher risk are those who have a family history of prostate or breast cancer, so a screening process should start at 40 years of age, once a year.

There will be six mobile medical units (Medibuses) outside Metro stations and health care tents, in which a screening will be carried out through questionnaires to know possible antecedents of the disease, and in case of requiring it to apply the prostate antigen test.

Starting tomorrow, at 215 health centers, screening will begin; in 59 of these, distributed in the 16 Delegations, prostate antigen tests will be performed, the results of which will depend on whether the patient is referred to another level of specialized care in three medical units of the Hospital Network of the DF. If the positive diagnosis is found, patients will be referred to medical units with oncology services.

Ahued ratified that a healthy society is a strong, just and equitable community and that for the Government of the Federal District, all sectors of the population are important, girls, boys, women, men, young people and the elderly.

The Head of Government was tested in the health tent set up in the Hidalgo garden of Coyoacán, along with the head of health of the capital, Armando Ahued, the Delegation Chief in Coyoacán, Raúl Flores and the musician Chacho Gaytán.
