What is low vision?

According to the Association to Avoid Blindness (APEC) in Mexico there are at least 2 million people suffering from low vision , which reduces their social and work development.

At a press conference, Pearl May , president of the Latin American Association of Low Vision , the ophthalmologic division of Bayer , stated that it is important to begin to become aware of the importance of visual health in favor of prevention, early diagnosis, timely care and adequate rehabilitation for patients with low vision.

Mayo referred to the macular degeneration , a disease that in countries like Mexico increases due to the aging of the population, a situation that affects the central vision of many people over 50 years of age; It is the leading cause of blindness in this age group.

What is low vision?

For its part, the medical Mildred Fromow , president of Mexican Center of Low Vision, He explained that the people who live with this disease are those who, due to different diseases, have difficulty performing their daily activities:

"They have a moderate to severe visual impairment, such as seeing blurred, seeing distorted and losing central or lateral vision, which makes it difficult to perform daily activities such as cooking, moving, reading and identifying the faces of people."

In this sense, Fromow clarified that it is essential to prevent and control the diseases that cause it, such as macular degeneration , glaucoma , waterfall , Diabetic retinopathy Y pigmentary retinitis .

On the other hand, the medical Lourdes Medina and Álvarez Tostado , a pioneer in the management of Low Vision in Mexico and Latin America , stressed the management is absolutely individualized and must understand how much and how the person sees, as well as their needs and motivators.

The expert recommended that people suffering from low vision acquire better eating habits, perform exercise , and stop smoke , to avoid losing sight in the medium term.

The Latin American Association of Low Vision: The Right to See , began an awareness tour for five Latin American countries, including Mexico, with the purpose of joining efforts between the medical community and patient organizations, and with this, to ensure that the largest number of people living with low vision in Latin America receive comprehensive treatment necessary, to maintain vision and prevent its progressive loss.
