Protect your heart with fiber

According to data from National Health Information System, In Mexico, the leading cause of death is cardiovascular diseases. Worldwide, the World Health Organization reports that, in developed and developing countries, between 15.6% and 13.7% of the population dies because of an event of this type.

It is important to mention that the development of cardiovascular diseases depends on factors such as diet and lifestyle, as well as sex, age or genetic history.

Within the factors there are the modifiable and those that are not modified. Regarding the modifiable factor, the diet stands out. A diet low in saturated fats and high in monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and fiber helps control blood cholesterol levels, which decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Among the reasons why fiber consumption helps protect your heart, are:

1. When a diet high in fiber is consumed, it limits the absorption of cholesterol and fat in the intestine, and also increases its elimination.

2. It helps control blood glucose, which consequently reduces the production of cholesterol and triglycerides in the liver.

3. Dietary fiber is fermented in the colon, the products of this fermentation (short chain fatty acids) also contribute to reduce the production of cholesterol in the liver.

In this way, the protective, as well as the control, effect of fiber against cardiovascular diseases has been scientifically proven. Therefore, an intake of 30 grams a day, from different sources, helps maintain the health of your heart.
