Social networks, key vs appetite

Watching photos of food on the Internet can help reduce appetite and lead to a more successful diet, largely because exposure to these images bores those who see them, so their hunger is lower, according to a study by the Brigham Young University in Utah, United States .

In accordance with Ryan Elder, researcher and co-author of the study , the study is inspired by the rise of "Foodstagram", or custom of uploading photos of food on Instagram, from which they could determine that looking at many photos of food can reduce appetite noticeably.

Social networks, key vs appetite

According to the research, seeing constantly - and not just before eating - pictures of hamburgers or cakes, for example, on Instagram and other photo sites like Pinterest, can have an "overpowering" effect, explains Elder. In this way, the next time a person confronts such a dish, they will not feel anxious and will not find it too appetizing.

"In a way, it's like you start getting tired of the taste without even eating the food. It is a sensory boredom, which means that after experiencing it with your eyes, you no longer want that flavor, a process that happens in a synesthetic way, "the author adds.

So if someone has a weakness for certain unhealthy foods and wants to stop eating it, they should try to look at more photos of that product, even if it reduces their appetite not a minute, explains Jeff Larson, co-author of the investigation.

During the study, the researchers subjected more than 200 people to about 60 images of food, such as desserts and sweets, from which they observed that the subjects who had satiated themselves in the sensory experience after seeing the photos, Trying real food no longer seemed as "rich" as in the picture, that way they managed to reduce their appetite.
