Rural areas lack gynecologists-obstetricians in Mexico

The term "obstetrics" comes from the Latin "obstruct " (be waiting). It is a branch of the Health Sciences that specializes in pregnancy, Birth and the puerperium (normal and psychological).

Dr. Héctor Rogelio Santana García, medical director of the Mexican Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology Colleges, said that 40% of those who graduate as gynecologists are women ; However, in a short time a significant number, abandon the professional practice, due to the care of their own family.

He also commented that to get to the specialty first you must study 5 years of general medicine, 1 year of rotating internship, 1 year of social service, accredit the medical residency exam and study the specialty of gynecology and obstetrics for 4 more years.

He added that the role of the obstetrician-gynecologist in rural areas is still scarce due to the lack of professional medical services in areas of difficult access; Therefore, in these regions the role of the midwife continues to be of great importance in the care of births.
