Migraine affects more Mexicans than Mexicans

The headaches or headaches are one of the main causes of absenteeism in Mexico, especially when it is diagnosed as migraine. According to specialists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS ), 18% of the population, especially in productive age, suffers from headaches; even, 80% of the students in secondary education, have suffered at some time.

According to Dr. Eduardo Reyes Quirós, neurologist at IMSS, the headache affects 6% of men and up to 18% of women, and although, in general, appears in all age groups, in the case of migraine it is more common among the population of 25 to 55 years old.

A person who suffers from frequent headaches or migraines has low performance at work and, often, is temporarily left incapacitated. In the neurology service of the IMSS, between 60 and 70% of consultations are for this reason.

A headache can be a symptom or illness

The fatigue or overwork and responsibilities can aggravate the problem, as well as the intolerance to noise and light . In the opinion of the specialist, headache is a disorder that can be a symptom or a disease, as is the case of migraine. If it is a symptom, it can be a sign of physical ailments such as flu, sinusitis, vision problems or infections in the mouth; or, for emotional reasons: stress, overwork, or family problems.

Other factors

Also the bad nutrition , constipation, or the ingestion of certain medications or drugs, can cause a headache, as well as seasonal changes or environmental noise. However, a constant headache, of those who "drill the brain" , can be a symptom of more serious diseases, such as epilepsy, tumors, bruises on the inside of the head or arteriovenous malformations.

Avoid self-medication

Therefore, according to the neurologist Reyes Quirós, self-medication is very dangerous . Depending on the degree of discomfort, the person suffering from strong and frequent headaches should be subjected to various studies to detect their origin and rule out certain physical or electrical disorders that may cause them. This involves the practice of encephalograms or tomographies and, of course, the diagnosis of a specialist.
