Cleaning products cause Parkinson's

A new study, published this week by the magazineAnnals of Neurologynotes that the chemical known as trichlorethylene, or TCE, is a common organic pollutant that poisons groundwater, soil and air, and is associated with a sixfold higher risk of developing disease of Parkinson .

According to information from CNN , there is another substance similar to the TCE known as perchlorethylene or tetrachlorethylene (PERC), which presents a risk 10 times higher to develop Parkinson . Both chemical products they are found in degreasers and cleaners metal, paint, stain remover Y liquids to clean carpets.

The National Institute of Ecology in Mexico, it points out that it is one of the common contaminants in groundwater that "represent the greatest risk due to its effects on the environment and on human health". In the country you can buy in commodity traders.

The chemical products and the solvents as the TCE previously related anecdotally with the disease of Parkinson , but for Goldman, there was no epidemiological study to prove their relationship until now.

To conduct the study, the researcher and his team identified six specific types of solvents that were suspected to be related to the development of the disease , two of which were the TCE and the PERC. Then they contacted 99 pairs of twins, each consisting of a person with Parkinson and the other one does not. All the twins were men, who were part of the National Registry for Research Twins Veterans of World War II and the registration of National Academy of Sciences .

Goldman and his team interviewed the twins using detailed and specific questionnaires about their work to measure the likelihood that each person would have been exposed to the solvents.

The scientists found that exposure to TBI, PERC and to a lesser extent another chemical known as carbon tetrachloride, were associated with an increased risk of developing neurodegenerative disease .

In this way, the findings in Goldman's study support an emerging line of thought among Parkinson's researchers that the disease is the result of a combination of genetic factors Y environmental .
