Yogurt is a dairy product made from cultures added to live and active milk bacteria: Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus mainly; to cause fermentation.

The fermentation changes part of the sugar present in the milk (lactose) and converts it into lactic acid; thus giving the characteristic acid taste. The flavor and texture of yogurt vary according to the culture, process and type of milk used to make it.

Therefore in GetQoralHealth and with information from the University of Florida (UF) we present the content of the main yogurt options.

Choose better!

1. Yogurt "flavored" They contain more added sugar and are presented in a wide variety of flavors or with "fruits in the background" that tend to be even higher in sugars.

2. Organic yogurt. It is made from organic milk, this means free of hormones, chemicals or antibiotics. Consumers choose it mainly to take care of their health and the environment.

3. "Greek" yogurt It is created from traditional yogurt and moisture is removed by placing it under pressure several times, resulting in a thicker, acidic yogurt with a higher protein content and less lactose.

4. Probiotic yogurt. Probiotics are live bacteria that have shown health benefits. The benefits include improving digestion and the immune system.

5. Yogurt "to drink" The main advantage is the accessible form of consumption; since its content is equal to traditional yogurt. The most "light" texture is achieved by adding water; It is recommended to consume it in moderation since it can be higher in sugar and calories than traditional yogurt.

6. "Traditional" yogurt It has acid taste and creamy texture. There are different varieties: whole, semi-skim and skim. It is recommended to select a fat-free or low-fat product.
