Work accidents increase in Mexico

Work accidents are a problem that increases in Mexico. According to the annual figures of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in 2010, 406 thousand 802 people suffered a mishap of this nature, against 399 thousand 125 a year earlier.

Only in regards to accidents, ranging from dislocations , Burns , wounds and fractures to amputations, in 2010 there were reported 403 thousand 336 cases, that is, for every 100 workers, 2.8 were exposed to one of these mishaps.

The data show that workers in the self-service sector were the most affected, compared to others such as those in the construction or preparation and serving of food.

Another sector with high accident rates was the preparation and service of food and beverages, that is, restaurants. In this activity 4.3% of employees were affected, with a total of 20 thousand 897 reports.

According to the IMSS data of the national total of accidents at work, 283 thousand 709 were men, while 119 thousand 627, women.

The most common incident was the traumatisms superficial with 108 thousand 96 cases, then the dislocations, sprains and tears, with 92 thousand 246, and wounds with 73 thousand 537 incidents.

However, there are accidents that can be fatal. According to IMSS data there were 1,222 deaths as a result of work accidents, this means that 0.8 workers per ten thousand had a tragic end while making a living.

According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), in the world six thousand 300 people die every day as a result of injuries or diseases related to the labor issue.

Land transport personnel were the most affected in 2010, with 3.5 deaths for every ten thousand workers, equivalent to 140 deaths.

On the other hand, during 2010 there were reported 3,466 people with a work-related illness in our country, being carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition that according to specialists affects those who use a lot of computer mouse and smart phones) the most It is recorded.

The syndrome of Carpal tunnel it occupies the sixth place as one of the most frequent work conditions.

In the first, the hearing loss conductive and sensorineural (loss of temporary or irreversible hearing), with 37.5% of cases. Then there is the pneumoconiosis (pulmonary problems from breathing dust, common in coal mines), with 18.5% of the total share.

On the other hand, the respiratory affections as a result of inhalation of gases, vapors and chemical substances occupy the third place in the counting of the most common occupational diseases with 10.5% of those affected.

Subsequently, in the fourth seat are the synovitis , tenosynovitis Y bursitis (inflammation in the tendons of various parts of the body), with 6.1% of total cases, while in the fifth is contact dermatitis (skin reactions) represent 4.1%.

Other common occupational diseases, although with a lower weight are the enthesopathies (inflammations of the areas in which the bones join with the tendons), shoulder injuries, stress in the spine, intoxications, among others.
