Consequences of unemployment

Unemployment can be one of the most traumatic experiences for people who live it, since it impacts all areas of their lives, including health, explains Robert L. Leahy, director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in the United States.

The most frequent and common consequence in health, which a person goes through due to lack of employment, is depression, explains the researcher; however, there are other complications associated with and related to unemployment, such as:

1. Despair, anguish and anxiety, m Sometimes channeled into a greater consumption of substances or the excessive intake of food to satisfy the sadness after losing the job.

2. The need to seek employment generates stress, and those who do not know how to control it, usually have worse mental health than the rest of their competitors.

3. At the family level, it can generate conflicts with the couple due to economic problems, even causing divorces.

4. Chronic diseases. The state of mind reduces health in general, and if it is not a direct cause, it is associated with the development or prevalence of diabetes, hypertension and even cardiovascular problems.

5. At the social level, unemployment generates marginalization and discrimination in certain populations, so that an unemployed person isolates himself, stops enjoying his activities and suffers from lethargy and chronic fatigue, as well as being associated with violent and criminal behavior.

In addition to learning to draw and assess the competitive advantages in the face of the lack of employment, the specialist recommends that to avoid health consequences due to unemployment, people learn to invest their time and effort in jobs that keep them busy soon and in conditions of acceptable health, from which the labor pyramid can be scaled again.
