The Nanotechnology Laboratory of the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery and the Institute of Physical Sciences of the UNAM, in collaboration with the University of Tulane, of the United States, develop a new treatment for the disease of Parkinson .
It consists of the implantation of silica gels with dopamine in regions of the brain that have been damaged by the disease, allowing a prolonged release of the compound. This technique has been evaluated in rats with brain injuries similar to those caused by evil, decreasing symptoms by 57%.
The cause of the disease , but it is known that its symptoms are caused by an insufficient production of dopamine in certain regions of the brain .
The conventional treatment consists in the oral administration of L-dopa -substance from which thehormone in the body, once a day.
The improvements of the new treatment are due to the fact that it is a system in which the release of the gel is constant and controlled, besides that it can be implanted directly in the brain structures who require it
The atoms of oxygen and of silicon, form networks capable of interacting with the drug molecules; which are strong enough to prevent it from dissolving instantaneously in the tissue achieving a prolonged release to the patient.
This new treatment has minors side effects that the conventional with L-dopa.
