Part of the maternal experience

The Breastfeeding has decreased in Mexico. Some factors that have contributed to this are: the increase in caesarean sections, the early return of women to work, the lack of spaces in companies to breastfeed, the malnutrition of mothers or have an inverted or flat nipple that prevents this practice correctly.

Breastfeeding, in addition to nourishing the baby, serves to make it less likely to develop allergic diseases and so that when it receives the first foods can tolerate them more easily. Despite these advantages, currently only 14% of Mexican women breastfeed to their babies, according to the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey.

Part of the maternal experience

Maritza Guerra Hernández, nurse graduated from the School of Higher Studies Iztacala, explained that one of the main positive aspects of the Breastfeeding it is mother-child attachment, in addition to helping to reduce bleeding (considered the first cause of maternal mortality); and in the first 30 minutes after delivery, it helps the uterus to involute faster by reducing bleeding.

According to the World Health Organization, the Breastfeeding it must be exclusive during the first six months of life; breast milk contains antibodies that stop and eliminate bacteria and viruses that can cause infections in the baby, and help protect against frequent childhood illnesses, such as diarrhea and pneumonia, two of the main causes of Child mortality in the world.

Likewise, with breastfeeding, the mother can also benefit, since this practice prevents breast cancer and cervical cancer, helps women to recover more quickly the weight they had before pregnancy and decreases obesity rates.

Guerra Hernández explained that it is recommended not to give formula milk or other food during the first six months of life, which can harm the baby, since his body is not adapted to digest them. In addition to its high cost, the formula is rich in fatty acids and casein, which can cause colic and constipation in the newborn.

In this way, breastfeeding among Mexican women should be promoted and teaching them some techniques to carry it out: properly place the baby's mouth; put your face and body in front of the mother and with the head at the height of the mother's womb; help with articles such as a blanket or pillow on the legs to put the newborn to bed and avoid fatigue; as well as feed him of both breasts.
