List of antibiotics that require a prescription

The sale and purchase of antibiotics to cure or control diseases, without the approval of a medical expert, is prohibited since 2010 in Mexico, due to the increasing abuse of their intake.

Why antibiotics pose a health risk?

By self-diagnosing a disease, without the prior assessment of a doctor or dentist that tells us what antibiotic is appropriate, if necessary and for how long we should consume it, reduces the effectiveness of the medication.

When we commonly consume antibiotics the body begins to create bacterial resistance, which can aggravate the disease or make the bacteria stronger, to the point of not being able to cure the infectious disease, says the Secretary of Health.

The control of the sale of antibiotics is necessary due to its irrational and inappropriate use. Only a doctor can prescribe them after a consultation and a review, to determine if it is necessary, or if there can be another solution.

Antibiotics should never be used to relieve a common cold or flu, since these diseases require another type of care, such as rest and the ingestion of liquids in abundance, says the portal of the Ministry of Health.
