Effective nuts against Alzheimer's

Apparently, the extract of walnuts (the dried fruit except its fiber) has protective effects against oxidative stress and cell death that occur in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's , revealed Abha Chauhan , director of the Neuroscientific Development Laboratory of the Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities in New York.

The research, published in the magazine Neurochemical Research notes that the extract from walnuts reduces cell death, by decreasing the generation of free radicals, which reduces damage to the membranes and attenuates DNA damage.

The research stated that the effect of the nut extract could be due to the active compounds present in the nuts, which can increase the capacity of the endogenous defenses (metabolic alteration), antioxidants and modulate the redox cell state (reduction-oxidation of the body)

In this regard, Chauhan commented: "Oxidative stress and inflammation are important characteristics in the pathophysiology of the disease. Alzheimer's . Nuts are a complete food rich in nutrients that not only provide antioxidants, but also alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), omega-3 fatty acids of plant origin.

According to the researcher, these components of the walnuts offer properties anti-inflammatory and protect brain cells from oxidative damage:

"This finding is a promising advance in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases, especially in regard to the consumption of certain foods that help maintain or improve cognitive health," reiterated the head of the Institute for Basic Research in Disabilities Development of New York.
