Depression is reduced with caffeine

The association between the amount of coffee with caffeine that is consumed daily and the risk of developing depression, It was analyzed through a study conducted with women in the United States.

According to the publication of Archives of Internal Medicine (Archives of Internal Medicine), in the research that was carried out in the Harvard School of Public Health to more than 50,700 women, it was found that the more coffee with caffeine is consumed daily, the risk of suffering from depression .

Information from the BBC notes that the caffeine is the stimulant of nervous system most used in the world and that 80% of it is consumed in the form of coffee, although so far there have been no studies investigating the impact of this stimulant on the risk of depression .

Previous analyzes had shown an association between the consumption of coffee and the risk of depression between men; However, this disease affects twice as many women as men, so they decided to investigate the impact of caffeine in women, the authors affirmed.

In the 10-year study, participants completed questionnaires, in 1980 and 2004, about the frequency with which they had consumed several beverages in the previous year, including decaffeinated coffee and with caffeine , tea, soft drinks with and without caffeine , and chocolate.

When the research began, none of the participants (whose average age was 63 years) had been diagnosed or suffered depression . In the 10 years of follow-up, the researchers identified 2,607 cases.

When comparing the information with the consumption of coffee with caffeine, It was found that women who used to eat two or three cups a day, showed 15% less risk of depression than those who drank a cup or less a week.

For their part, those who consumed four or more cups a day showed 20% less risk of developing the disease; no link was found between the consumption of decaffeinated coffee and the risk of depression .

An association between the caffeine in other products (such as soft drinks) and the risk of depression, which, according to the authors, could be due to the fact that the stimulant in these beverages is not as powerful as the one contained in the coffee .
