80% of Mexicans do not know that they have dyslipidemias

Around 60% of the population has the good cholesterol low and 30 to 40% live with high triglycerides , which can cause them cardiovascular problems Serious that leads to death or leave with irreversible consequences.

In accordance with Simon Barquera , director of Research in Programs and Nutrition Policies at the National Institute of Public Health, indicated that the set of alterations of the lipids in the blood as the bad cholesterol Y high triglycerides or the good low cholesterol , it is called dyslipidemias .

He stressed that these diseases are serious because they are silent and do not produce symptoms, which causes the person to suffer for 10 or 15 years without realizing it until he suffers. cardiovascular problem , which is the leading cause of death in Mexico.

The specialist mentioned that efforts are being made to promote better care and timely diagnosis of dyslipidemias : Specialized Medical Units in Chronic Diseases were created and diplomas have been taught to train top-level physicians in the treatment of hypertension , diabetes Y obesity .

In addition, a manual was prepared that will be distributed free of charge to thousands of doctors in offices and primary care units to improve the intervention, diagnosis and treatment of this type of problem.

Barrera Cervera detailed that the prevention is done with the practice of styles of healthy life , decrease in consumption fats , adequate weight, consumption of fruits and vegetables, physical activity, elimination of tobacco habit and diet low sodium .

He commented that dyslipidemias can be controlled with diet , exercise and, in some cases with a medication, but it does not cure. The main problem is the accumulation of plaque in arteries that thickens, hardens and increases pressure levels, with the consequent risk of accidents and vascular problems .
