Researchers of the Department of Dermatology of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Porto Alegre, Brazil , revealed that obesity generates diseases of the skin that can be seen with the naked eye.

In the study published in the magazine Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venerology, confirms that the appearance of warts or cracks in the skin are generated by excess weight.

For the study, two groups of people were analyzed, one with patients suffering from obesity and others with a stable weight, to detect some dermatological manifestations.

According to the analysis of the study in Brazil and other research carried out by the Outpatient Clinic Alfredo del Mazo of ISSEMyM in Toluca, Mexico , skin diseases were recorded more frequently in people with obesity. The problems that were found are:

  1. For insulin resistance: Acanthosis nigricans, pendulous or white fibroids, acrochordons or elongated warts.
  2. For hyperandrogenism in women: Acne, hirsutism and alopecia of androgenetic pattern
  3. By increase of body folds: Candidiasic intertrigo (dermatitis) and bacterial complications.
  4. For mechanical reasons: striae due to distention, benign lipodystrophy, plantar hyperkeratosis, peripheral vascular insufficiency, lymphoedema.
  5. For hospitalization of obese patients: Pressure ulcers and abnormal scarring.

In another study of Departments of Dermatology and Regenerative Medicine, of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in North Carolina , skin problems occur in a person with obesity due to the natural function of the skin barrier, the sebaceous glands, the excess of sweat, the obstruction of lymphatic vessels, the decrease of collagen and the accumulation of subcutaneous fat.

When a person is overweight or obese, it is normal for the skin to rub constantly in an environment full of moisture, especially in the belly area and on the heels.

Therefore, it is important that people acquire healthy habits that promote a healthy weight and improve the appearance of the skin.

Meanwhile, skin care in patients with obesity should be encouraged to treat any disease in time or rule out the presence of infections. The best thing is to take care of yourself and take a balanced diet combined with a little physical activity.
