Hypoallergenic milk?

Researchers of AgResearch and the University of Waikato , in New Zealand, announced the creation of a cow genetically modified that is able to give hypoallergenic milk in order to prevent reactions in people suffering from this type of allergy.

According to his study, published in the magazine Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), the modified cow produces milk without beta-lactoglobulin (BLG), a whey protein from milk which usually causes allergic reactions in many people.

Daisy, as the cow was named, has not yet become pregnant or has produced milk naturally, so that scientists used hormones to promote production.

In addition, they modified the production process of the milk when adding material genetic by a technique called RNA interference. These molecules have the ability to inhibit a gene , which is responsible for generating the BLG, according to what the professor in genetics Manuel Pérez Alonso, from the University of Valencia, comment to elpaís.com

For this reason, once the production of milk can be analyzed and there were no detectable levels of BGL protein according to the authors of the work, according to the country.com

It should be noted that the most frequent problems linked to the consumption of milk are the allergy to some of their proteins, such as BGL, as well as lactose intolerance (a type of sugar), which develops between 2% and 3% of children under one year.

Therefore, the importance of this study, given that it is mainly aimed at giving an alternative to all those people who can not consume milk because it causes them food allergy.
