What is the chikungunya virus?

According to World Health Organization , the first outbreak of this virus in Southern Tanzania in 1952, but as of 2004 the chikungunya fever It has reached epidemic proportions and is the cause of considerable suffering and morbidity.

It is transmitted from one person to another, by the bite of mosquitoes infected females, which also transmit other diseases such as dengue .

The symptoms of the disease are fever, joint and muscle pain, headaches, nausea, tiredness and rashes . Most patients recover completely, but in some cases the joint pains can last for several months or even years.

An important risk factor is the proximity of the houses to mosquito breeding sites, the prevention measures propose the reduction in the size of the water tanks where the mosquitoes are created, fumigation and use of repellents against these insects .
