Take care of your liver!

Scientists of the Research Institute of the University Hospital12 de Octubre de Madrid They analyzed the benefits of the stem cells obtained from the placenta, and discovered that they have the ability to regenerate the liver.

In the report, published on the nosocomial page and in the magazine Cytotherapy , it is detailed that adult stem cells (mesenchymal) can be transformed into hepatocytes (liver cells), which helps the regeneration of the injured organ.

The researchers detail that placental mesenchymal stem cells cultured in vitro with proteins that are naturally found in the liver, can be converted into hepatocytes and form a structure similar to that of a small organ half a centimeter thick.

This structure registers the organ's own activity, that is, it maintains the production of albumin, a protein that allows the correct distribution of body fluids in the body.

The scientists highlight that this is the first research that demonstrates the formation of biological structures capable of developing a liver function from placental stem cells.

Take care of your liver!

Despite new discoveries it is vital that we take care of our body to prevent the development of diseases that damage the liver. Thus, Jorge Luis Poo, specialist in liver diseases , gives you some recommendations:

Remember that most liver diseases are generated by excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, as well as viruses and infections, so moderation is the key to maintaining good health. Beware!
