Six ways to protect your privacy in cyberspace

Online dating is becoming more common, since people of all types, in theory, could find their soul mate in cyberspace. Here are six tips to find that special someone, keeping your privacy and online security.

1. Avoid large chats and public rooms where anything can (and does!) take place. Some people frequent these areas only to see that they can get away with it. Instead, try to choose small, specific websites, or chat rooms that match your interests or lifestyle. There are many online dating sites that refer to specific hobbies, and that are also free.

2. When you are in a chat room, or forum that corresponds to your interest, introduce yourself to the information that you feel comfortable giving it. Do not give your phone number, address or any other personal information on the site. Wait until you find someone you really click with, and even then, after talking with them for a while, common sense and instinct are excellent indicators of when something does not seem to be going well.

3. Participate in the forum or chat regularly. Keep a low profile until you start forming friendships with regular members in the area. Be honest Being natural is what will attract a particular person.

4. Keep limited correspondence to email and chat until you know the person enough to feel comfortable with your phone number and speak for the first time. If you need to break the ice, start the talk by talking about the forum or chat where they met and any special interests they share.
