Can a medicine for Diabetes prevent cancer

The drug metformin has been used for 50 years by diabetics and patients with resistance to insulin.

Because of its mechanism of action, there are dozens of studies evaluating the influence of metformin in various types of Cancer. The first results have been unequivocal: metformin not only exerts a protective effect against the development of the Cancer, but even patients with breast, colon, prostate, pancreas and ovarian cancer who take metformin they are more likely to survive.

Insulin is the most important hormone in the metabolism of sugar, but it also has other lesser known functions. It is one of the most important hormones to stimulate growth. From intrauterine development to height are determined by the insulin.

In people with type 2 diabetes, some drops of insulin stimulate the growth of many types of cells but especially susceptible are the cells derived from the ectoderm. The tumors most frequently associated with insulin are epithelial tumors such as breast, colon and endometrium

Before the development of malignant tumors, patients with higher levels of insulin already show benign signs of accelerated growth.

Mechanism of action of Metformin against cancer

Metformin acts at the molecular level by activating an enzyme essential for life called adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is so important that it is found in all living organisms. Its activity is crucial for the control of cell growth

AMPK works as an energy sensor, recognizing changes in ATP determines whether lipids and carbohydrates will be stored or transformed into energy. It reduces the production of sugar from the liver and increases the uptake of glucose of the blood.

AMPK regulates cell growth, determining when the cells they must slow down their cellular activity and frequently completely shut down the growth of defective cells. When AMPK is activated cancer cells "die of hunger."
