2 out of 3 deaths due to lack of prevention

Two out of every three deaths in Mexico occur due to lack of prevention and of Healthy habits . An example of this is that Mexico ranks first in the world in childhood obesity and the second one in obesity Y overweight of its general population.

According to a study published by the AXA Insurance , greater prevention is key to strengthening and recovering the health of Mexicans and even to generate savings in the face of the rising cost of care for these diseases.

The rate of obesity and diseases related to aging They reveal that the country faces a silent health epidemic that consumes more and more resources and lives. In this way, insurers could assume a greater role in the prevention and timely detection of illnesses and encourage healthy behaviors.

In this sense, AXA Insurance reported that the Federal Health Secretariat (Ssa), affirmed in 2011, that if the current trend continues, in 6 years it would have to dedicate its entire annual budget to attending to illnesses caused by the obesity .

On the other hand, Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) spends 50 million pesos a day on the care of patients with diabetes . In turn, the country spends more than 75 billion pesos in the care of diseases related to smoking .

And it is that Mexicans pay more in curative care (in doctors and hospitals) than in preventing diseases; However, international experience shows that it is possible to focus on prevention, with good results, to modify habits, reduce diseases and reduce costs. In the study, it is revealed that with an effective policy, Finland has managed to improve the feeding habits of its population in 30 years and reduce mortality from heart disease by 80%.

For all this, AXA calls on the authorities and the population to be more aware of their lifestyle and have health insurance, although the key lies in modifying certain eating patterns, exercise, have a health service, etc.
