5 tips to avoid injuries in yoga

Practicing yoga has innumerable health benefits; It reduces stress effectively and is the ideal complement in the treatment of diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, back pain, to name a few.

However, as in any sports discipline, there is a risk of injury. To help you practice yoga more safely, follow these five tips:

1. Adopt beginner's mind . Although yoga seems simple, it is not. It is important that when you choose this discipline as a physical activity, you select classes for beginners, since forcing your body to perform postures to which you are not accustomed can cause you a severe injury.

2. Learn to listen to your body. In any yoga class, the body, not the teacher, is the true guide of what is best for you. Listening to your body and honoring its signals is the key to a safe practice. If some movement causes pain or pressure, change to a position to relax.

3. Customize your routine. The exercises that work for your best friend do not necessarily work for you, especially when you are a beginner and your friend is an expert in yoga. Remember that yoga in its essence, is about being in sync with the body. Do not rush, gradually you will develop skills that will make you an expert in yoga.

4. Find your optimal point. This search consists in finding the point where the body is challenged but at the same time you find yourself inside your comfort zone. The advantage of smart points is that there are gentle stretches and muscles are working, but there is no pain, tension or fatigue.

5. Choose the teacher and the focus. The practice and teaching of yoga is not universal. Each teacher has his focus, style, experience and training. Find the classes that suit your needs taking into account your goals, if you have an injury, your age, your performance, etc., to make the most of the benefits of this discipline.
