Women are happier than men

A recent study published in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry suggests that women have a "gene of happiness "that men do not have. This explains why there are more happy women than men.

In this research, data of 193 women and 152 men who were evaluated with regard to happiness were analyzed. In addition, they were subjected to tests of DNA and a long-term study on mental health .

The results were that the gene of the "Monoamine oxidase A" (MAOA) , which regulates enzyme that breaks down neurotransmitters like the serotonin and the dopamine , substances that cause "well-being" have greater concentration in women.

A version of gene MAOA increases production of monoamine , in this way the levels of these neurotransmitters remain longer in the brain and improve the mood. In the case of men, they carry a low expression version of the MAOA gene , for this reason they are less happy than women.

The Dr. Henian Chen of the University of South Florida He mentioned: "I'm surprised, because the MAOA low expression has been linked to some negative results such as alcoholism , aggressiveness and antisocial behavior. Some scientists have even called it the gene warrior, but at least for women, our study points to a brighter side. "

Although women have a higher incidence of mood disorders, they tend to have greater happiness than men, statistics show. And you, how happy are you?
