Why do we eat more when it's cold

With the arrival of the cold not only do we want to cover our bodies but also to eat more .

According to the investigations of Ira Ockene, cardiologist of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and of Marcia Pelchat, from Monell Chemical Senses Center of Philadelphia, there are several reasons why we feel and increase considerably the consumption of foods during the winter .

On the one hand, although we live and work in controlled environments, that is, we usually modify conditions such as lighting and temperature, our brains still keep some traces of primitive instinct programming.

In this sense, there are people who feel the natural need to increase and store calories in the time of cold to survive, especially those who live in polar regions.

On the other hand, Seasonal Affective Disorder , a condition related to depression and behavioral changes due to the absence of light and the shortening of days during the winter, influences the eating habits of people, triggering a greater consumption of sweets and starchy foods.

However, Pelchat says the causes are more related to the appearance affective and with the bad habits of today, because an association is made between certain foods with happy episodes of people, especially in the Christmas because it allows them to live together with their loved ones.

Besides that in these celebrations a greater amount of food , so that temptation and excess become determining factors.

Therefore, if you think you have this tendency to Overeating , either by instinct, opportunity or by some good memory, you must put forward moderation and healthy habits not only during the winter season, but also for the rest of the year.
