The risks of wanting to be like a Barbie

We are talking about anorexia and bulimia, two pathologies modern victims usually have pubescent and adolescent girls, with average or higher intelligence, obedient, calm, with low self-esteem and who always want to please and help their family members.

Those who are now mature women wanted to look like the fifty-year-old Barbie doll; The girls of today want to be like any of the hundreds of models, actresses or singers who, with their extreme weakness, are not the best example of health.

In the last two decades, thinness has become the calling card of all those men and women who want to succeed socially and professionally. "The messages that refer to the body image are omnipresent and with them the idea that being thin is the means to obtain happiness and success is transmitted. The pressure is excessive ", highlights Dr. Gonzalo Morandé, Hospital Niño Jesús de Madrid.

Anorexia and bulimia

For Dr. Arieh Goldberg, bariatric doctor and specialist in eating disorders, anorexia does not appear overnight and some seemingly healthy attitudes such as starting to take care of food, exercise or drink more fluids, become, every day , more and more exaggerated until reaching the physical and mental deterioration.

In the case of bulimia , it is the rapid ingestion of a large amount of food in a short period of time, followed by the provocation of vomiting and / or the indiscriminate use of diuretics, laxatives and / or excessive exercise in order to cancel the effect of the food consumed.

Emotional complications

As either of the two disorders progresses, the girls move away from their friendships, from their schoolmates, and become unconcerned about their sexuality, says Goldberg.

"They are not interested in having a boyfriend and they become very limited in their emotional responses and rigid and subjective, often deny their fatigue, deny the extreme cold they feel, deny hunger and needless to say of their exaggerated weight loss and the distortion of their body image. That is, they feel an intense fear of being adults and having to separate from their parents, "adds the specialist.

They reject menstruation and consider it a punishment that must be hidden. This type of personality, plus the malnutrition of the anorexic or bulimic patient, makes her behave with great irritability and little concentration.

According to medical data, of ten people suffering from anorexia or bulimia in Mexico, nine are women between 15 and 26 years of age.
