Teen deaths exceed child mortality

The mortality rate between the teenagers has exceeded that of children, as well as the number of male adolescents who die by violence or injuries, publishes the medical journal The Lancet.

A study in more than 50 countries during the second half of the 20th century, found that most of the deaths in young people is due to car accidents or for risky behaviors . Violence and suicide were causes as well.

The research has exposed a change in the historical trend due to the success of programs to reduce Child mortality. However, a generation gap has been left unattended and is a big gap, since more than two fifths of the world's population are between 5 and 24 years of age.

The Dr. Russel Viner of the University of London College and author of the study, notes that trends will continue to decline in terms of infant mortality, but that it is expected that mortality in young people will grow in the next 25 years.

At the beginning of the 21st century, incidents like car crashes, street fights andgang violence , generated between 70% to 75% of all causes of death among adolescent men between 10 and 24 years of age in all the regions studied.

For the year 2004, suicide and violence they were responsible between a quarter to a third of the deaths among young adolescents between 10 and 24 years of age.
