Narcissism detonates stress in men

A recent investigation of the University of Michigan declares that the narcissism harms the health of men, it produces stress and generates heart attacks . The narcissism it is a personality trait that is characterized by an exacerbated egocentrism , extreme self-concern, overestimation and a sense of grandiosity.

The investigation consisted in examining the narcissism through the analysis of the levels of cortisol in a sample of 106 undergraduate students. In addition, to evaluate the narcissism of the participants, a questionnaire of 40 subjects was administered measuring five different components of the personality trait.

The specialists measured the cortisol at two points in time in order to assess the base levels of the hormone , which showed the degree of activation of the body's response system to stress , the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA).

The high levels of cortisol in a relatively free situation stress could indicate chronic activation of the HPA, without a factor of stress implicit, which has important implications for health, increasing the risk of cardiovascular problems.

Although narcissists have great self-perception, they also have negative views of themselves, and often resort to aggression when their sense of superiority is threatened. This type of aggression is related to the increase in cardiovascular reactivity to stress and the blood pressure high.

The scientists also explained that the greater effect of narcissism in man it is due to the social definitions of masculinity that overlap with the narcissism For example, the idea that men should be dominant and strong.

In this way it can be inferred that high levels of narcissism poorly adapted contribute to the damage of Cardiovascular system , what causes heart attacks fulminants and irreparable damage to male health.
