Marijuana can accelerate episodes of psychosis

The consumption of marijuana or Cannabis , May cause Episodes of psychosis sooner in patients who are already predisposed to develop them, and in others, it can detonate them, according to a new study published by Archives of General Psychiatry.

TheCannabis is the substance more addictive and used after tobacco and alcohol. Millions of young people worldwide tend to consume Cannabis, or marijuana, during adolescence, but there is little research regarding its association with psychotic effects.

The researchers found that the use of Cannabis and other illicit substances are associated with an early onset of psychotic disorders in predisposed people, and their presence in people without predisposition.

In contrast, the intake of alcohol it does not seem to be significantly associated with early episodes of psychosis. It was found that a higher proportion of marijuana users develop such episodes.

The publication indicates that there is strong evidence that the decrease in the use of the drug could delay or even prevent some cases of psychotic episodes. Reducing the consumption of marijuana could alter the result of the disorder and avoid reaching schizophrenia, although the development of schizophrenia depends on many other factors.

An episode of psychosis can confuse reality and hallucination causing distortion between the two. Psychosis is reported in cases where patients are diagnosed with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolarity.
