Learn all about yaws

The yaws is a chronic infection, typical of tropical areas, which mainly affects the skin , bones and joints. This infection mainly affects children under fifteen years of age.

It is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, related to the one that causes syphilis, but this disease is not transmitted sexually. It is spread by direct contact with skin lesions of infected people.

What are the symptoms?

The disease develops when the bacteria penetrates the skin; Four weeks after infection, the person develops an ulcer called "buba madre," a lump that looks like a "raspberry" and is usually painless. This can last for months and others may appear before or after the mother's ulcer heals. Bone damage, inflammation of the bones and fingers, scarring of the skin, are some more symptoms.

In the terminal stage, ulcers of the skin and bones can cause severe disfigurement and disability. This occurs in up to 1 in 5 people who do not receive treatment.

What is the treatment?

Spanish scientists propose the administration of azithromycin in a single dose, to eradicate the disease completely. The reappearance of this is uncommon.

If your little one has some of the symptoms mentioned above, go immediately to your doctor, especially when you have been in tropical climates.
