Joy and recreation for children with cancer

In order to bring artistic and cultural activities closer to children hospitalized with cancer, who because of their physical condition require help to travel through that painful moment and why not in a creative way, the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), in conjunction with the National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA), develops the program Hospitalarte .

The idea is that the pediatric patients of Social Security, as well as their families, have a moment of joy and recreation, while they remain interned in medical units of the Institute. This program includes three types of activities: creative workshops, readings or narrations and artistic presentations.

In this regard, María del Carmen González Contreras, head of the Division of Cultural Development of the Coordination of Social Benefits of the IMSS, indicated that in the Federal District, Hospitalarte is performed one or more times per week in the National Medical Center Siglo XXI, in the hospitals of Pediatrics and Cardiology; in the General Hospital La Raza and in the Orthopedics and Traumatology Hospitals in Magdalena de las Salinas.

González Contreras, indicated that in 2009 alone, 255 presentations were carried out to benefit Hospitalarte to more than seven thousand 350 people, between children and relatives.
