Generic medication could save lives

Generic drug used to stop heavy menstrual bleeding, could save the lives of traffic accident victims and help reduce the number of fallen in combat .

British experts reviewed the effectiveness of tranexamic acid , or TXA, and found that the substance is able to reduce about 10% the Death risk in injured patients with severe bleeding , compared with those who did not receive treatment. What would be equivalent to saving more than 70 thousand lives per year if the drug compound was used worldwide, as indicated by the research team in the journal The Cochrane Library.

The TXA reduces the risk of bleed to death after an injury and seems to have few side effects, he said in a statement Ian Roberts , of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

More than 90% of traumas occur in low and middle income countries, where access to medicines is usually restricted, due to poor infrastructure and scarce resources.
