I see myself fat?

I see myself fat? We often use this question with family, friends and partners, especially the latter, who regularly answers: "Of course not." However, a study revealed that the personal image of ourselves is very different from what he sees. Actually, many times they think otherwise.

At the Danish Research Institute AKF, scientists surveyed more than a thousand people, asking them to categorize themselves as weight loss, in normal weight, little overweight, obese or severely obese. The results were compared with the body mass index of each person and the results were surprising.

On average, most men tend to underestimate their obesity. Many of the men whose body mass placed them in the obese category were described as being within the normal weight range.

Women, on the contrary, think themselves heavier than they are. Many of them described their weight as normal when they were below average, or were considered obese even though they were within the normal parameters of body mass.

However, both severely obese men and women are considered less heavy than they are. But the real surprise was not this, but what happened when the participants were asked in what rank they considered their partner to enter.

They found that women consider their partners to be a bit thinner than they really are, while men show a clear inclination to overestimate the weight of women. According to the study, a woman of 1.60 meters high, for example, is seen as obese by her partner if she weighs more than 58 kg.

The sociologist Vibeke Tornhøj Christensen, leader in the research, commented: "When men begin to perceive women as overweight even before they are, it goes against the general idea that men like them women with curved figures ".

She considers that the difference comes from the need to see men as "muscular and protective", while, thanks to the media, femininity is associated more and more with a thin body.

The same criterion applies for children. Parents tend to see their overweight girls and their men thinner than they are. However, when it comes to their children, parents usually do not notice severe obesity.

But before you start a diet it is important that you check your body mass index, in addition, always try to go with a nutritionist. The personal image It is important, but also your health.
