Hydrate yourself thoroughly!

Maintaining proper hydration before, during and after exercise is essential for the human body, because through it the nutrients and minerals necessary for proper functioning of the body are obtained, especially in high-performance athletes.

Within the framework of International Congress on Sports with Consciousness Gatorade-UNAM, Luis Fernando Aragón Vargas, researcher in thermoregulation and hydration, ensures that there are many drinks to recover the hydration of the body; however, they do not all work.

The professor of the University of Costa Rica details that a hydrating drink after exercise should improve the performance of the athlete, cool the body and satisfy the need for thirst.

A moisturizing drink, such as sports drinks, should stay in the athlete's body for a long time, to help him recover the minerals, salts and nutrients that his body discards through perspiration, without being eliminated immediately through the urine.

Hydrate yourself thoroughly!

"Pure water is not perfect for the hydration of athletes, while sports drinks cover the needs of sodium and potassium that are required," he says. Aragón Vargas .

He is also a member of American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), points out that this is because water is rapidly discharged through urine, so it does not allow the body to recover 100%.

"There are multiple beverages that promise to properly hydrate the body; However, due to the speed with which they are eliminated, they do not fulfill this function, "the researcher says.

Among the drinks that fulfill the same function as water and that do not hydrate the body 100% after exercise are the water of Jamaica, mineral water with apple juice.

Meanwhile, milk and coconut water are drinks that have a high caloric, fat and sodium content; They are also eliminated slowly, so that their nutrients are better utilized. Even, coconut water has properties similar to those of a sports drink.

However, neither coconut water nor milk can outweigh the benefits of sports drink, since high potassium concentrations offer no additional benefits in the rehydration process, compared to those already obtained by a drink containing sodium, says the specialist.

Although sports drinks are a good option to hydrate the body, their consumption should be moderate, especially, not having a constant physical activity. And you, how do you hydrate your body? If you want to know more about hydration click here.
