Giant food reduces appetite

The group of Hirose Tanikawa from the University of Tokyo , developed an AR system that manipulates the feeling of satisfaction after eating, by changing the appearance of the size of the food, one of the best tips to lose weight.

The system comprises a removable screen with a camera and uses an image processor to make the food look bigger than it actually is, as shown in the following video:

The size of the food is modified in real time when it is in the hands of the diner, because the system creates a natural image using a deformation algorithm that only visually affects the dish.

This technology stimulates the sensation of having eaten in a visual way. "We have identified that when the food looks bigger, you feel full immediately, but when it looks small you do not fill up even if you eat a lot," explains the developer.

When the food is magnified 1.5 times, the amount ingested decreases by 10 percent. When you see two-thirds of its actual size, the amount increases by 15 percent.

The current screen codes the dishes by colors using a blue screen. However, they want to make the system usable in the home, so that it works as one of the best tips to lose weight, making use of more intelligent image processing technology so that it can be used with any dish in different kinds of tables.

It is expected that in the future a technology will be developed that stimulates better life habits without having to do them consciously. For example, very caloric foods could be automatically magnified by the computer to avoid excess in their intake. And healthy foods should look smaller, so that people eat more. And you, would you be willing to use this process to lose weight?
