Cancer and diabetes decrease in dwarfism

An international team of experts identified a mutation in the gene that regulates growth hormone, responsible for the short stature of a group of people in an Ecuadorian population, which prevents the development of Cancer Y diabetes , as well as various problems associated with the aging .

About, Martín-Montalvo , co-author of the study that was published in the magazine Science Translational Medicine, commented that these results could help to design therapies that reduce the incidence of both diseases:

"We show how the cells of individuals carrying the mutation in the gene encoding the growth hormone receptor activate a process of controlled cell death, better known as apoptosis , when faced with situations of stress . This increase in apoptosis results in less accumulation of DNA damage in the cells. In this way the capacity of these is limited, to enter into transformation processes that favor the development of Cancer ”.

For the research, scientists, including Alejandro Martín-Montalvo from the Andalusian Center for Development Biology (CSIC-UPO), followed, for 22 years, the evolution of a group of 99 Ecuadorians from an area close to The Andes that suffer from Laron Syndrome, a congenital disease that causes dwarfism .
