According to the World Health Organization, depression is a frequent mental disorder, characterized by the presence of sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or lack of self-esteem, sleep or appetite disorders, feeling of tiredness and lack of concentration.
Currently in Mexico, from 12% to 20% of the adult population suffers or has suffered an episode of depression, as indicated by the Health Secretary. However, is reducing depression in our hands or in what we drink?
Moderate wine consumption (two to seven glasses a week, the equivalent of one glass a day) can reduce the risk of depression. This is indicated by a study, led by Miguel Ángel Martínez-González, from the University of Navarra and published in the magazine BMC Medicine.
The research took seven years, in which a follow-up of a group of five thousand 500 drinkers with light and moderate consumption of alcohol, between 55 and 80 years, was maintained.
The findings showed an inverse association between these low-moderate levels of alcohol and the frequency of new cases of depression, which decreased when people drank a glass of wine daily.
