4 out of 10 women with postpartum emotional disorders

From 20% to 40% of women report some disorder emotional or cognitive dysfunction in the postpartum period.

This is mentioned in the article "Mental disorders and pregnancy", written by Celia Urbina and Sergio Villaseñor, included in the University Digital Magazine of the UNAM, November 10, 2005 (//www.revista.unam.mx/vol.6/num11/art108/nov_art108.pdf).

For this phenomenon there are many explanations, however the article mentions that the most frequent is when the mother feels "that something has been stolen, it is not complete, it has no value and that the new being has all the importance, it is already something alien to her and over which she will no longer have control ", the previous thing falls in the attention that is offered to the new baby, since he takes a bigger role.

The text indicates that there is the possibility of triggering a psychotic outbreak, which may also occur after the abortion, or of a product that is born without life, that dies shortly after or after a false pregnancy.

In addition, it states that in rare cases (1 or 2 of every thousand deliveries), postpartum depression characterized by depressive feelings and suicidal ideas, can reach a psychotic proportion (hallucinations, delusions and even thoughts of infanticide).
