Matilde Montoya pioneer obstetrician

Matilde Petra Montoya Lafragua was born in Mexico City on May 14, 1859. Thanks to her, women Mexican women can study the race of medicine .

Educated as an only child, she had to fight against the precepts of her father, who did not understand his interest in studying.

Being a minor he enrolled in the School of Midwives and Obstetricians of the House of Maternity, which cared for single mothers. At age 16, Montoya received the title of Midwife.

When he turned 18, he moved to the state of Puebla and soon became very famous, thanks to his knowledge. The protests and defamations by the doctors of the region did not wait.

Years later he decided to return to Mexico City, where for the second time he applied for registration at the National School of Medicine, and was accepted by the then Director, Dr. Francisco Ortega in 1882, at the age of 24.

At the end of his career he had to write a letter to President Porfirio Díaz, since the statutes contemplated the graduation of "students" and not of "students", who issued a decree so that the examination was not delayed and took place on October 24. August 1887. On the day of his professional examination, Montoya graduated in the presence of Porfirio Díaz.

Matilde Montoya worked in private practice until an advanced age and died on January 26, 1938, at 79 years of age.

The National Association of Mexican Medical, decided to implement a medal with his name that will be awarded each year "as recognition to women committed to the Health and the sense of humanitarian life and social commitment ".
