Increasing taxes on tobacco decreases addiction

The smoking is one of the most important public health problems in Mexico . It is estimated that between 25 thousand and 60 thousand people die prematurely every year in the country, due to diseases attributed to the consumption of cigarettes.

The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control , establishes that the increase in prices through taxes is the most effective measure for the control of the epidemic linked tosmoking

In this regard, the federal health secretary,José Ángel Córdova Villalobos , commented through a press release that "another increase in the price of cigarette packs for next year is being studied, as it has helpedinhibit tobacco use among young people , which is the most vulnerable group to acquire aaddiction ”.

He also pointed out that as cigarette prices increase, there are positive impacts on health, as there are fewer cases of intensive care, cancer and cancer atherosclerosis , among others.

In Mexico, incidence of smokers in adults it is greater in men than in women; 13.3% of the population over 20 years of age smokes daily and 5.6%, occasionally.

However, as is well known, thisaddiction not only occurs in the elderly. In fact, most adolescents initiate consumption before the 15 years; 38.3% ofyoung mexicans suffers from this addiction.
