Environmental pollution detonates heart disease

Researchers at the Descartes University in Paris have proven that the exposition continue to the main atmospheric pollutants , may be associated with a significantly greater risk of suffering a heart attack in the short term, in less than a week.

There are many researches that, for more than 50 years, have been studying the potential effects of pollution about health cardiovascular . And on this occasion, the new study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), once again warns of the consequences of atmospheric pollution about health.

In this regard, they confirmed that there is a relationship between air quality and the heart disease ; proof of this, is that in industrialized countries these diseases are the main cause of mortality .

The researchers analyzed the effects of the main contaminants : ozone, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide Y particles in suspension.

They also searched the medical literature and identified 34 studies that met the criteria for inclusion in the analysis, observing a significant statistical association between atmospheric pollutants analyzed and the risk of heart attack , with the exception of ozone .

The authors suggest that this may be due to the inflammation that cause these contaminants , since studies have shown that inflammatory markers such as C reactive protein , are higher as a result of exposure to air pollution .

Some observational studies have linked the high levels of air pollution with the increase of heart rate and a lower variability thereof; while it has also been associated with an increase in the viscosity of the blood , which can lead to the formation of clots in blood and accelerate the development of atherosclerosis .

And, although the researchers acknowledge that the association found in this study is relatively small, compared to other classic risk factors of heart attack , As the tobacco , the hypertension wave diabetes , the majority of the population, including young patients and the disabled, is exposed to air pollution .
