Counterproductive action

Often as a parent you think that punishment is a natural part of the education of your little ones, applicable when they do something bad like cheating on you, but have you ever wondered if punish to children by lie works?

If you really want your children to tell the truth, it is best not to castigues or threaten to do it if you they lie , since that does not work, assures a study of the McGill University .

Counterproductive action

Victoria Talwar , from the education department of that university, together with a team of researchers, came to this conclusion after making a experiment simple in which 372 participated children between 4 and 8 years old.

For the study, the specialists left each child alone in a room, with a hidden camera recording, for a minute with a toy behind them at a table, after having indicated that they did not flip during their absence.

Upon his return, he was boy the question: "When I left, you turned around and grabbed the toy?" With that response and review of the videos, the experts discovered that a little more than 2/3 of the participants turned around.

In the same way, when asked if they had played, again about two-thirds of the little ones they lied , and the larger they were the more likely to tell lies.

For researchers the most interesting thing is that children were less likely to say true if they were afraid to be punished , contrary to whether they were asked to be sincere, either to please their superiors or because it was Right , which made the little one feel good.

The younger the children were, the more focused they were on telling the truth to please to adults, the older ones had internalized norms of behavior , which motivated them to say the true because it was the right thing to do, says the study.

The conclusion is that the punishment it does not promote the search for the truth. In fact, the threat of punishment can have an opposite effect by reducing the likelihood that children will be sincere when they dare to do so, "says Victoria Talwar.

The best way to prevent your children from lying to you is to promote a good communication , where they have absolute confidence and can openly recognize their mistakes before you without fear . You must forget the punishments and teach them the consequences of their actions.

You, do you agree with this study or do you think that punishing children for lying works?
