When to eat carbohydrates? According to information from the Harvard School of Public Health , the popularity of certain diets fostered the belief that carbohydrate intake favored weight gain, especially at specific times; however, other studies strongly suggest the opposite.

An investigation of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem suggests that consuming carbohydrates at dinner controls hunger during the day, which helps reduce body weight by up to 20%.

However, in the study published in the Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases , the researchers clarify that this method works in people who eat a diet low in calories.

For the study, two groups of Israeli policemen were analyzed, who had to try a low-calorie diet (1,500 a day) for six months. Everyone was given the same amount of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

However, one of the groups ingested the carbohydrates at night, while the other consumed them during the day.

At the end of the study, the researchers note that the policemen who ate the carbohydrates at night lost 27% more fat than those who followed the normal diet.

In addition, they point out that this type of diet positively influences the secretion patterns of hormones responsible for hunger and satiety (leptin, ghrelin), as well as those associated with the metabolic syndrome (adiponectin).

That is, combining a low-calorie diet with carbohydrate intake at night helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

For its part, the Harvard School of Public Health He details that the best carbohydrates are in whole cereals, fruits, vegetables and legumes, but there are others that favor weight gain such as soft drinks, white bread and processed foods.

Remember that the important thing in your diet is the total sum of calories, carbohydrates and nutrients which may or may not promote weight gain.
