In order to improve the quality of life and the self-esteem of the minors with cancer, specialists in Oncology of the High Specialty Medical Unit (UMAE), Pediatric Hospital of the National Medical Center (CMN) Siglo XXI, developed a model of comprehensive medicine with advanced research through the Brain Tumor Research Laboratory.

The doctor Enrique López Aguilar , in charge of the oncology service in this UMAE of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), said that in this laboratory the behavior is studied in vitro of the samples of the carcinomas extracted to children.

Cultures of these carcinomas are analyzed in the Brain Tumor Research Laboratory, as well as cerebrospinal fluid , to know how they are developed and organized at the cellular level, which makes possible adjust the treatment to the needs of each patient, since these conditions evolve differently in each child.

Dr. López Aguilar, in charge of the Oncology service at this UMAE of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), explained that thanks to the translational medicine , which adapts the results obtained in laboratory research to daily medical practice, it is possible to grant a individualized treatment and, even, less aggressive to each patient, improving the perspective of life, a characteristic that places this Oncology service of the IMSS among the best in the world.

Since the child with cancer requires highly qualified attention, in the Oncology service of the Pediatric Hospital of the XXI Century CMN, it is provided with a multidisciplinary team conformed by oncologists, surgeons, pediatricians, therapists and psychologists, at all times it is a joint work with the parents of the sick minor.
