Alliance to reduce maternal deaths

Lima Peru. (Lucia Lagunes Huerta, sent / CIMAC) .- In a new alliance, leaders of Latin America and the Caribbean, agreed to influence all spaces to make maternal health a priority that is reflected in concrete actions that save the life of women.

After two days of work convened by the Regional Working Group for the reduction of Maternal Death (MM), 70 leaders from 13 countries of the region agreed to join forces and put their leadership in favor of women's lives, defend sexual and reproductive rights and work for the decriminalization of abortion and against the criminalization of women who abort.

Businesswomen, journalists, politicians, judges, young people, agreed to articulate alliances that generate political influence so that in each country there are the necessary resources to overthrow the GM and guarantee that women can access and choose among all contraceptive methods, in such a way that can exercise their sexuality with protection to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

During the commemoration of the international day of action for women's health, they recognized the effort that for years has driven the feminist movement to make visible the seriousness of every minute a woman dies from complications during pregnancy, childbirth or puerperium.

Declaration of Regional Conference of Women Leaders

Deaths that are perfectly preventable if there are sufficient health services, with trained personnel, not only in the technique and attention of obstetric emergencies, but in the respect of the human rights of women, in multiculturalism and in the exercise of sexuality of the young

The declaration of the Regional Conference of Women Leaders will be "the guide so that our voice is socially amplified and our leaders act in favor of maternal health and all the rights of women in the framework of international human rights treaties and commitments. "

This same declaration will be presented at the Women Deliver world conference, the most important international meeting on the subject, which will be held in Washington.

Under the slogan "break the silence, add our voices", the leaders of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Peru, also committed to mobilize resources private as public "to promote solidarity, free and reduced out-of-pocket spending, for the urgent reduction of maternal mortality".

They assured that they will promote citizen monitoring for transparency and accountability regarding the use of resources and the implementation of policies at the national, regional and international levels.
