Primodina has a risk of becoming addictive

Certain drugs are prescribed for the control of epilepsy and other attacks. One of these is the primidone . Brands like RO- Primidone and Mysoline are some examples. Although classified as anticonvulsant drugs, primidone possesses many of the characteristics of barbiturates. It is for this reason that it has the potential risk of becoming addictive.

Primidone acts on a part of the brain that inhibits nerve transmissions that occur in attacks. The person who has been taking it for a long time and no longer needs it, I should not stop suddenly . What you should do is reduce the dose gradually over a period of 10 days.

Stopping using primidone suddenly can cause severe epileptic seizures. Some of the side effects include fatigue, loss of appetite, irritability, involuntary movements of the eyes, irritation of the skin and sexual impotence.

The usual dose of primidone prescribed for adults is 250 milligrams per day, which can be increased to 1,500 milligrams per day, depending on the needs of the patient. Children under the treatment of the primidone have to be closely supervised. The usual dose prescribed for those under 8 years of age is 125 milligrams per day, and can be increased in doses of up to 750 milligrams.

The overdose of primidone presents the same dangers as in those cases of overdose by barbiturates. A typical case of primidone overdose is known to cause irritation, fever, sore throat, stomach pain and unusual contusions or bleeding in the victim. In this case, the patient should be taken to an emergency room immediately.
