Laptop or iPad generate insomnia?

The research showed that a two-hour exposure to electronic devices such as computers or iPads can cause the suppression of melatonin, a fundamental hormone in the cyclic functioning of certain bodily processes such as sleep.

Led by the specialist Mariana Figueiro , the study establishes that this exposure can reduce the production of melatonin 22%, and this level the affectation can be reflected in an insomnia of the users.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, and its main function is to coordinate and regulate the biological rhythms of the body.

The research team established that the duration of the exposure and the distance between the eye and the screen are the elements that determine sleep affectation.

With this study, the specialist Figueiro hopes to influence the manufacturers of these devices to make more pleasant light screens for sleep and to avoid night disorders such as insomnia.
