Alcoholism decreases by text messages

According to an investigation of the University of Pittsburgh, text message programs are a promising strategy to reduce the problem of alcoholism , as well as other behaviors dangerous to health.

These types of interventions are an example of what is known as "participatory health ", Explains the author Brian Suffoletto, doctor and assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at the University.

In this sense, 15 young people who registered an excessive consumption of alcohol they had to send and receive weekly text messages to follow up. At the end of the program, after 12 weeks, they reported having drunk less than at the beginning.

The participants of the study, who maintained anonymity, received immediate feedback on their intake of alcohol , instead of weekly or monthly information from a counselor, which could reinforce positive behaviors and offer a better idea of consumer habits.

Text messages incorporate two characteristics of traditional counseling against alcohol : a monitoring of the consumer's own behavior and the establishment of short-term goals.

According to the specialist, cell phones have become a part of our body, so they can be very precise when contributing data in an evaluation of consumer behavior, compared to "just remember how much you drank" when facing a doctor or therapist.

So this type of programs are an alternative for the prevention of problems related to the alcohol , the drug and the lack of sexual information, in addition to promoting healthy habits such as exercise and a good diet. And you, do you promote any activity or healthy habit with your friends through text messages?
